Care Information

Futon mattresses are layered with fibre fillings so initially will contain a lot of air.

Your new futon mattress will always settle by approximately 20% in the first few weeks of use.

Our futon mattresses are intentionally manufactured to be thicker than their Japanese counterparts to account for settlement and therefore may seem difficult to fold at first.

With use your futon mattress will adjust to your seat position.

All new materials, including the natural fillings like wool, have their own particular smell, this is because none of the fibres used in our fillings are bleached or chemically treated. Any natural scent will gradually disappear over time and airing the mattress will help to eliminate potential scent.

To look after your futon and stop it settling unevenly, we suggest you roll the futon one way and then another, or occasionally give it a shake (a job for two people) to re-distribute the fibres.

Settlement may be irregular and more noticeable if a person sits in one position on the futon constantly or a single person sleeps in the middle of a double futon. We recommend that use of a futon should be regulated across the surface to allow even settlement.

Your futon is a mattress therefore the outer cover cannot be removed, the zip is for manufacturing purposes only.

We recommend that your futon mattress is used on an appropriate slatted futon or bed frame.

We do not suggest using our futons directly on the floor, moisture can condensate under the futon, leading to an increased risk of mildew to form.

As with virtually all natural materials, the dye does not completely permeate the fibre. Therefore, if you rub it with a wet cloth, or put it in strong sunlight, the colour of the fabric will fade. For removal of small stains, we suggest using a damp, but not wet cloth.

If you wish to protect your futon mattress, or if your cover becomes heavily stained, we sell futon mattress covers to fit your futon, please see below for details of care instructions for futon mattress covers.

We highly recommend using a mattress protector to protect your Futon Mattress when used as a bed.

Care of your Futomat

Our Futomats are made using natural fibre fillings and they initially contain a lot of air.

Your Futomat will always ‘settle’ by approximately 20% in the first few weeks of use. To take this into account our Futomats are much thicker than their Japanese futon counterparts.

The first few weeks Initially your new mattress may feel different from what you are used to. Allow one month for your body to adjust to the new level of comfort and support and for the mattress fillings to settle.

All new materials, including the natural fillings like wool, have their own particular smell due to the materials not being bleached or chemically treated. Any natural scent will gradually disappear over time and airing the mattress will help to eliminate potential scent.

To look after your Futomat and stop it settling unevenly, we suggest you roll it one way and then another, or occasionally give it a shake (a job for two people) to re-distribute the fibres. Settlement may be irregular and more noticeable if a person lies in one position on the Futomat constantly or a single person sleeps in the middle of a double Futomat.

We recommend that you turn your Futomat from side to side and rotate end to end fortnightly for the first four months. After that time, it should be turned every month. Proper care of your mattress will aid with even filling settlement and to prolong its longevity.

It is not uncommon for a small dip to appear in your Futomat where the natural fibres have constantly been compressed. This can be anything up to 2.5cm depending on the specific mattress. This is not a fault and it’s perfectly normal for natural fibres to settle over time.

To prevent excess settlement, vary the sleeping position you are in on the mattress to prevent sleeping in one area only.

Your Futomat is a mattress therefore the outer cover cannot be removed.

For removal of small stains, we suggest using a damp, but not wet cloth or if necessary, a dry-cleaning spray. Do not use detergents as they may bleach or disintegrate the fabric. The futon should be well ventilated afterwards and allowed to dry thoroughly before remaking the bed with sheets.

Air your mattress - It is important to let your Futomat breathe to allow moisture to dissipate, humans natural produce over a pint of moisture during the night.

Use on a bed base - The mattress is not designed to be used without a bed base. Check that the bed base is undamaged and supportive, or this could affect your guarantee. We suggest a slatted base is best with slats set at approximately 7.5cm apart.

We highly recommend using a mattress protector to protect your Futomat from moisture.
